Meh. I’ll give it a month.
I mean, you know. I don’t wanna fall out of the rape loop forever.
LOL ha ha so fucking funny. Wouldn’t it be nice to be a white male and get to “mute rape”? Fathers of daughters who act like this make me sad.
This is such a bummer. Women are under attack, in every city, all over the world, every day. Time and attention are one thing, but making jokes because you’re male and don’t have to give a shit is totally, totally another.
WOW. this is beyond disgusting. Hope that smug laugh to yourself was worth it, Merlin Mann.
“Muting mentions will not prevent push notifications” has never been more appropriate.
This is really too bad.
You know, absent his Tumblr post, there might have been nothing wrong with Merlin’s muting mentions of rape on his Twitter feed. He could’ve had any number of legitimate reasons, and it’d be nobody’s business what they were.
But he posted a screenshot of it to Tumblr, with “self-defense” in the URL, a title that included “meh,” and a snide little joke about staying in the “rape loop.” And now we know that his reasons are, like, ugh, I’m so tired of hearing about rape all the time.
How fortunate for Merlin that he can put it out of his mind by adjusting a few settings. Is fortunate the word I’m looking for here?
Listen. Listen: I live in Chicago and that is a huge big urban area, and as a result the past 6 years I’ve integrated into my life the concept of “which street I could walk down is the least rapiest?” And that’s with an LOL that quickly subsides to “No, really.”
And what I know of Merlin is that he has an adorable daughter who lives a big urban area, and when she’s old enough to ask “Which street is less rapey” I hope he remembers not to mute her annoying debate.
I think this is crappy on a variety of levels, not because he’s a “white male with a daughter.” Hell, white men with daughters get raped. Men get raped. Women get raped. Their children - boys and girls - get raped. Every race, creed, religion, hairstyle - and that’s really quite enough. All of us are in it together, and his muting means he thinks he’s not, which is horseshit.
